FREE Tyre Safety Check

When was the last time you checked your tyres?

When tyres are performing as they should - smoothly and efficiently, we pay them little or no attention at all, however it's only when things go wrong that we remember the four things that keep our vehicle on the road and in turn keep us safe.

Despite the severe weather we had back in January which caused havoc to the roads by way of potholes, it seems that motorists are still paying little regard to their tyres.  Driving over potholes can alter the vehicle’s steering and suspension geometries or damage critical components which can reduce vehicle safety or generate extra running costs. By ensuring wheels are correctly aligned, drivers can minimise the effects of any pothole damage and ensure they remain as safe as possible.

At Inchape Ford, we happen to think that the best time to take action on tyres is not when things have gone wrong, but long before any serious problems have emerged.

As tyres are so safety critical, the law is very specific about what is acceptable for road use. Avoid a potential fine/penalty for driving with an illegally low level of tread by bringing your vehicle into our service department for a thorough FREE Tyre Safety Check , our technicians will note any concerns they have with your tyres and give their recommendations

Factors affecting your tyres' performance:

·     Incorrectly inflated, damaged or old tyres can lead to aquaplaning and poor vehicle handling.

·     Incorrectly inflated tyres can lead to increased fuel consumption and subsequent increase in CO2 production.

·     Poorly aligned wheels can result in uneven tyre wear and will also affect your vehicles’ safety and handling.

·     A 3mm tread depth results in a considerable increase on braking distance.

Tyre Tread Depth Guide

 Remaining Tread Depth

·            8mm - Your tyre is 0% worn

·            7mm - Your tyre is 15% worn

·            6mm - Your tyre is 31% worn

·            5mm - Your tyre is 47% worn

·            4mm - Your tyre is 62% worn

·            3mm - Your tyre is 78% worn

·            2mm - Your tyre is 94% worn

·            1.6mm - Your tyre is 100% worn

As a rough guide a millimetre (1mm) of tyre tread lasts approximately 1,000 -4,000 miles dependent upon driving style, road and weather conditions and the tyre rubber compound.
